To survive the harsh climatic conditions of the upper Andes,
the alpaca grows a thick coat of extremely
fine, hollow-cored fleece. Over the centuries, breeding practices
have resulted in a consistent, uniform coat of fine, luxury
fiber. Alpaca fiber, which has no lanolin, is very different
from wool. Even in its finest counts, the fiber is stronger
and more resilient than any other wool, and has more thermal
capacity than almost any other animal fiber. The cellular structure
of the cashmere-like fiber produces a soft handle unmatched
by most others. Once reserved for Incan royalty, even the courts
of Queen Victoria favored alpaca over cashmere. |
