Ventilation

The newest endeavor of the 01-01 recruit class was to learn the practice and principles of ventilation. A widely used technique that effectively removes heat, flammable gasses, and harmful smoke.

Many homeowners do not appreciate this technique as it seems we are causing unnecessary damage to their property. What they don't understand is that firefighters need to be able to have a safe environment to work and visibility. The damage that they smoke would cause, along with the tremendous heat produced would destroy a home. Ventilation may add some damage to a structure, but in the long run a 4x4 hole, and some sheet rock are much easier to replace than an entire home.

As many tragedies have proven to the field of fire fighting, fire deteriorates the stability of a structure which in turn creates a major problem for the fire fighter. We train to look for warning signs of possible collapse. One such method is sounding the roof, which means hitting the roof to hear if the roofs surface is stable enough to hold the weight of a firefighter. With this vital knowledge we can effectively save lives, conserve property, and decrease environmental hazards by preventing fire spread.
