Hang on to your
helmets Spokane, a new batch of recruits is in the making at the
Region 9 recruit academy. This academy is intended to give those
interested in the fire service the basic tools of fire fighting
tactics. Throughout this six and a half week program the recruits
are taught the basic skills of: Fire fighter accountability, fire
behavior, ground ladders, the incident command system, personal
protective equipment and much, much more.
I personally have acquired a residency position with Spokane County
Fire District 10, located in Airway heights, and will be partaking
in this academy. I will be explaining what training is passed along
to our class, as well as events that transpire within our class.
There is also a picture gallery
for you to browse, and get a vivid image of what we encounter, endure,
and enjoy.
The
first class of 2001 so far has been through two and a half weeks
of the training. Each Wednesday night from 6-10 we partake of a
classroom lecture and have a small amount of hands on training.
Every Saturday we have hands on training from 8am to 5pm.
Our first night we were divided up into our companies which consists
of 5-7 recruits. Our class contains 5 companies full of eager students
ready and willing to participate in any training the academy brings
forth. Our main instructor, (Jim Panknin) has been one of many instructors
there to assist us, and guide our class into safe, practical execution
of firefighting tactics.
If you would like to be apart of this academy, or just would like
to find out if the fire service is for you, call up your nearest
fire district and see if they are accepting residents. If you are
in the Spokane County, or Stevens County 1 areas, it is more than
likely that they will send you through this academy, and after six
and a half weeks you will know if the fire service is for you. I
highly recommend getting your feet wet in this field. Not only is
it exciting, but it is very rewarding.
Please check back soon for updates on the 2001-01 recruit academy.
Sincerely,
Jessy Wardwell
